We suggest the best time for this programme to
be implemented is during the Autumn term. This enables schools to run
the programme and have time to evaluate it, whilst fitting in with the
SAT timetable.
Once you've read through the overview and contents of the teacher's
pack you'll have a good general idea of the resource.
Given the sensitivity of the subject matter, and that the resource covers
four age groups, there should be discussion and a planned approach taken.
Having one person to act as coordinator helps to ensure you get the
best from the programme. This may be a PSHE coordinator, a KS2 coordinator
or any member of staff who feels comfortable with the approach and content
of the resource.
Discuss with other members of staff - initially those who deliver KS2,
then literacy and PSHE coordinators, named staff and governor with responsibility
for drugs education, and the headteacher.
Also discuss and possibly go through the resource with a PTA member
or a parent whose views you feel will be of particular value to gather
their feelings and initial response.
Adopt the programme into the school drugs policy and possibly into the
school development plan.
Check online for updates to the programme and news of how other schools
have used the resource.
As with any programme, the work should be monitored and reviewed. We've
included a pupil assessment sheet in the Teacher's Guide to help you
in this.
